Just was curious on what people use and why?
I've only used Microsoft OS, and lately I haven't been impressed. In my opinion XP was their best version. Windows Vista was awful, and windows 7... well I have only used the starter and then you need to upgrade.
For the most part I'm not a fan of Microsoft and I would like to use another. Possibly Linux.
Your reviews/opinions/operating system that you are currently using?

Oh and also anyone used Ubuntu?
reviews on that are much appreciated as well.

I use both Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.4 (yes, that is OS X). I prefer Windows, because I am used to it (and most stuff is written for Windows) , but Mac has a good GUI.

Starter is awful. Use a full version of 7 Home.

I use OS X and W7 Enterprise equally, and Linux for specialized tasks.

What makes you say Ubuntu isn't good unless you are a nerd? I am not saying it is better or anything, but from install to use, it makes itself incredibly easy to use, outside of maybe wireless issues with laptops. And even that was easily solved as the package contains the software that fixes that problem for the majority of users.

I personally use Ubuntu (I do a lot of programming and other things of the sort) mostly, and am currently in the process of trying to get both a Mac OS and Win7. My experience with Mac has basically taught me two things; that I am not (at all) used to it, and that external hard-drives don't always play nicely with it. Other then that it seems absolutely great.

My 3 desktops (one of which is never on because I need to get around to replacing a fan it it at some point, which hasn't happened yet even though the problem has existed since at least the summer) all run XP. My laptop runs 7. If moving files around and reinstalling a bunch of stuff wasn't such a pain, I'd probably upgrade my newest desktop (though it's older than lappy) to 7, but it's fine how it is for now. My other running desktop couldn't handle 7 at all (it was built for 98, I think, and lags even though it does next to nothing.) As for the dead-fan one, if I ever actually go fix that, I'll probably install Ubuntu on it again and get back to experimenting with that.

I hate Macs.

I've used DOS, Windows 95, 98, ME (yes, seriously), XP, Vista, 7, OSX, Ubuntu, Fedora Core, and a handful of other Linux distros. My favorite has probably been XP home, but Ubuntu was interesting. I'm currently running OSX 10.* with Crossover to run some Windows programs.

If we're discussing historical use, I've also used 2k, 98, 95, and 3.1. Before that I'm not quite sure, but it's quite possible that I used a generation or two earlier as well. I don't think I go all the way back to DOS, though.

Not that I much remember my use before XP. I barely remember the fact that I've used 3.1 at all.

I've used....Mac OS (a long time ago, I don't remember which release), Windows98, 2000, XP, and Vista in the past. None of them are comparable to Win7

I also sometimes use the Command Line and DOSBox (a revival of DOS)

I'm considering switching to Linux. Any reviews? Which type? Should I code my own?

....

Then again, Linux is practically a religion.

Current: XP Pro, 7RC, Gentoo Linux.

Future: 7RTM (probably Home Premium) in place of RC, and Kubuntu 9.10 in place of one of the Gentoo installs.

Historic: Windows: 3.11, 95, 95osr2.1, 98, ME, 2kPro. Linux: Mandrake, SUSE, Red Hat, Slackware, Kubuntu 7.10, and probably a couple others. I also tried FreeBSD sometime in the 5.x era.

Oh, I forgot Vista, which I had on my laptop before 7. Also, XP, Vista, and 7 were all pro.

And I forgot that I've tried Ubuntu before on my not-so-running desktop as a dual boot, I just never got very far.

The next computer I install is going to be Gentoo. I haven't heard anything positive enough about the new Windowses to want to buy them, and that includes preinstalled.

I have most of my family on Linux because it does what they need and I was tired of removing their viruses.

A friend of mine from UIUC has done the same with his mom and sister, for the same reasons.

Right now? I use XP for the little gaming that I do anymore and recently I moved all my other devices/dual boots back to Ubuntu from Fedora. I personally love Ubuntu as it more recently (last 2 or 3 major releases) became much more streamlined, in my opinion of course. Ubuntu is pretty easy to use anymore.

Historically I've run Windows pretty much from 3.11 up to XP; other than Windows I've been playing with different versions of Fedora and Ubuntu since about the 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) release. I've also more recently set up an install of Free BSD but didn't really get any further than the install since around that time I started devoting most all of my free time to programming.

I also heard that theres a way to have more than one operating system on your computer, anyone ever done this?

It is harder if you want to use a Mac OS with something else, from what I have heard (which is limited). However, Vista (and maybe Windows 7 or XP?) is actually designed to deal with another OS being on the system. Simply installing Ubuntu on the drive Vista is on and it will automatically prompt you at start-up, asking which OS you want to boot up in.

Yes, as CdocZ said it's really not terribly difficult. I personally have done it several times, see here and pay particular close attention to the How To Resize Windows Partitions link. That all being said be aware that there is a possibility that things can go wrong and you could lose everything so make sure you backup and be careful.

Also to correct what CdocZ said, it does not need to be on the same drive. Also, Ubuntu is able to do the OS-choosing, as well as other linux distros (I'd assume.)

It's called dual-booting.
