I'm planning on doing this: http://www.pyweek.org/

I'll be creating a 2D sprite/tile-based game or possibly a 2D puzzle game depending on the final theme that's decided upon for the competition. Or maybe something between. It all depends on the theme they choose and what ideas result from it.

Individual or team entries are allowed and I'm okay with doing all the coding on my own, but if there's someone who has experience with PyGame and would like to help, that would be cool.

However, I'd really enjoy help from someone who's good at creating video game art (sprite animations and such) or sounds/music as those would be my personal bottlenecks.

Let me know if you're interested.

Hmm...the ability to make something like this is the key aspect of it.

Mr. ikanreed has volunteered (via IRC) to do music and (maybe?) some coding.

I'll volunteer for art. I haven't done many animations before, but I'm pretty good at intimidating sprites into obeying my will. Does all the art have to be done in a week too?

What sort of music are you looking for? I've been playing around a lot of chippy 8-bit old video game stuff lately. Here is a remix that I did lately (everything except the vocal samples is original). I could easily collaborate with Mr. ikanreed if you want.

I might as well officially sign up for art. I may not be very good at it but I will give it a go -- tiles, animations, sprites, backgrounds, etc.

I have no problems playing with others (besides, Spears is awesome).

If I were better with python, pygame, and weren't currently quite busy enough programming-wise in a 3D graphics course, I would be game. Sadly, those make me, well, not game.

As I am not any sort of artist so there's not much I can probably contribute but if it's an option I would love to be involved in the process; I'd like to see how projects by people who know what they're doing work and who knows maybe I might be able to contribute something small.

Just throwing this out here.
*hint hint*
Before/during/after pyweek, people should make tutorials for those of us (me) who aren't capable of making a game yet. Sounds like loads of fun, great incentive to start learning more as well. Those of you who can do the graphics I think tutorials or "blogs" would be really cool. :D

I remember you were working through the pygame tutorial a while ago. Did you ever finish that?

In any case, I haven't seen you active for a bit (I think, I'm not terrible good with O'Harian time) welcome back.

I really need to:
A) port over the ~20 pages from the old PyGame tutorial from NP6 and
B) finish it.

The frustrating bit is my style of game architecture has changed a bit since then. It may be worth it for me to create mini-game tutorials. Quicker tutorials that exemplify a minimalistic game of various genres. Since I have been doing Silverlight for games almost exclusively lately, I've been slapping together quick games to repair my atrophied PyGame muscles in preparation for PyWeek. I could definitely post a few quick tutorials before then.

I agree, as I am one of those people too.

2D graphics are not my strong suite, but I'm in a 3D graphics course right now. I fully intend on attempting to write an OpenGL tutorial series during the summer. I quite likely won't be as motivated by then, but I do hope to get it done.

Like this:

I wanted to make sure I could figure out how to get inclines working properly in a tile universe in a timely manner. This was 452 lines of code and took about 8 hours of actual coding and debugging. Not the best code, and there's still an off-by-one error that causes him to fall through the ground occasionally that I can't track down, so I'll try a new one later. I feel like I'm training for a marathon.

Status update: Sunday night's drop

This is mostly an infrastructural drop that probably isn't worth your time if weren't really interested to begin with. There's plenty of things not filled in yet that crash when you try to view them and temporary images everywhere.

Another drop will come tomorrow night.

Tuesday's drop

This is actually fairly playable. There's a hard-coded bat in the top left corner of each screen and the storyboard pictures are temporary. Also, if you have one, plug in a USB joystick and go into the input configuration menu. There are only 2 levels (attempting to view the 3rd one will crash).

Not sure if anyone's playing these. Or they're just keeping quiet about it, but here's Thursday's drop. This one is playable end-to-end. The levels are still stubs but pretty much all code is done.

And also because it's not clear in the game, yet:
  • space - jump
  • z - shoot
  • x - run
  • enter - start
  • arrow keys - arrowing
  • f - toggle full-screen
  • w - toggle wide-screen

Although the experience is much more fun with a USB controller plugged in.

It's giving me

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "run.py", line 3866, in <module>
File "run.py", line 704, in __init__
WindowsError: [Error 3] The system cannot find the path specified: 'media\\sound/*.*'

Edit: It worked. I don't know what was wrong.

Oh. I extracted it but ran it from the zip. The next time I ran it from the extracted one.
(By the way, the game is awesome!)
