When I started NP, it was a Geocities page where I posted jokes I received in my email, Starcraft cheat codes, and video game MIDI's. The title was called "Blake O'Hare's Homepage: A Nerd's Paradise". And it was simply a home page where I posted whatever crossed my mind.
From there, it grew organically: not really planned and still guided by my whims. However my intentions were to make it grow to a professional website that people could turn to for a comprehensive and well-organized source of information and entertainment. It took 8 years of remodelling, adding, deleting, and frustration to get towards this goal which, arguably, was never fulfilled.
At this point I realized that what I was trying to do was make two entirely different things and attempted to stick them into the same site, on top of holding on to snippets of inside jokes that very few understood anymore diluting archives that are utterly unbrowsable as it is.
So I have finally separated my goals out.
I want an academic site that is well organized and, while humorous at times, still has a high quality bar for content. In addition, I want a fun site where people can go and read things for hours and listen to admins (or whomever) rant about silly stuff.
Obvious solution: make two different websites.
So I sat down and made a mental model of both of these sites entirely separate from each other. Even though I borrowed some code and infrastructure from NP, both of the sites I mostly thought out from scratch. New looks, new organization, focused goals, and new names. And all of the sudden, the organizational problems worked themselves out beautifully.
I have the academic-oriented "half" of NP done and hopefully the fun "half" will be complete within the next several weeks. Ideally I'd like to show you both websites, but unfortunately my fear of site activity getting stale has overcome the need to have both done by the time I release to the public.
So now I present you with the first half.
I've built this with navigability and quality excellence in mind. I also promised myself that I would not make another release with broken images everywhere or incomplete archives. I believe I've held true here. Anything that was on NP that you don't see on tDEB did not make the cut but may appear hopefully on the other site that I will release in the coming month.
Your NP account, your messages, your profiles, your forum posts, have all been transferred to tDEB and will work normally when you log in.
